Flow Measurement Demonstration apparatus (SMT-FM-26A)
This apparatus is designed to demonstrate and compare various methods for measuring fluid flow rate, using instruments such as a Venturi meter, an orifice plate, a rotameter, and a pitot tube. It allows students to study the pressure distribution associated with each device and understand the practical principles of flow measurement in a single, integrated unit.
The unit features transparent PMMA constructions of the Venturi meter, orifice plate, and a pitot tube for flow velocity measurement, all connected to an eight-tube manometer board that visually displays the pressure head at different points. A centrifugal pump circulates water from a built-in stainless steel reservoir, enabling independent operation without external bench requirements. The rotameter provides a direct visual flow rate reading, allowing for comparison with the calculated flow rates from the other devices.
Its primary application is in fluid mechanics education for teaching the fundamentals of internal flow and meter calibration. The key benefit is the side-by-side comparison of different flow meters, enabling students to directly observe energy losses, discharge coefficients, and the accuracy of each method, which is essential for selecting appropriate measurement techniques in engineering applications like water supply, HVAC, and industrial process control.
